Jaime Cruz is a charismatic figure of the wines and gastronomy of Funchal, which has been, for many years, one way or another, connected to these complementary areas. He went through several restaurants as a partner and had his own wine distributor company, but about four years ago he decided to change his life and set up his own restaurant, which he gave the suggestive name "Lá Ao Fundo". It is located in one of the many alleys of Funchal's historic area, a pedestrian street, very close to the fortress, right after the cable car. There, he puts his wisdom and experience to good use, preparing an eclectic, varied menu, with great influence from the Portuguese diaspora's recipes, from Africa to India, but also with well-prepared fresh fish dishes. The grilled meats on a hot stone are already famous and have a regular clientele. The room is large and well decorated, with a well exposed wine collection, where there are wines from all over the country, with great presence of Madeiran wines. But the most sought-after space is the huge esplanade, literally covered by huge sun umbrellas. Either rainy or sunny, it is a great place. Very well-set tables and professional and competent service, with great friendliness. For those who appreciate it, Lá Ao Fundo has an extraordinary spiciness.
