Constructed from an existing small chapel dating from the sixteenth century, one of the most popular religious festivals on the island is celebrated in this parish.
The Church of Senhor Bom Jesus, located in the parish of Ponta Delgada, was built in the 16th century from an existing chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
In a neo-mannerist style, inside this church one can find gilded altarpieces and a vestry in Baroque style.
On the first Sunday of September one of the most important festivals in honour of Senhor Bom Jesus is held. It attracts pilgrims from all over the island, all of whom are devoted to the miraculous image of the Good Lord Jesus.
Legend has it that a fisherman was fishing in the sea and found a crucifix. Along with other fishermen, the man took the crucifix to the village centre but it mysteriously disappeared and the fishermen found it in a cane field close to the sea. After this episode, the men of this village then built a chapel for the Good Lord Jesus next to this cane field, which later became the present church.
