Up in the mountains, a recovery of an old building and the recovery of the traditional regional gastronomy.
It is located up in the mountains, coming from Camacha. It's a traditional mountain construction, the recovery of an old house with history. The bar is very important here, spacious, because there are many people drinking the poncha [traditional drink] of the house, which is famous. On the other side is the dining room, spacious but very comfortable. It has beautiful thick wood ceilings and, on the walls, there are many antique furniture with glass doors, filled with bottles of wine. On the other side, there are many old black and white photographs that tell us a bit about the history of this space. The traditional menu does the rest. At the front of the room, there is a huge fireplace, lit most of the year. In the huge kitchen there's also a wood oven, always crackling. The soups are mandatory and fantastic: chicken soup, tomato soup, onion and poached egg soup, old-fashioned wheat soup or a Madeiran açorda (bread soup). Cod with corn bread on the tile, scabbard fish fillet or tuna steak are the most famous fish dishes. But the meats are powerful, such as wild boar fillets with fruit, Madeiran skewers, lamb chops with orange and rosemary or beef loin on fire. And the special dishes, kid stew in the pot, rabbit stew or roast shepherd's piglet. Then we get lost in the desserts.
Outside, the landscape is fantastic.
