Located at Lombo da Atouguia in Calheta this chapel was built by João Baptista Teixeira in 1783. Currently, the chapel serves as the main church of this parish and has for patron St. John the Baptist.
Atouguia Church holds the only late relics of Pope John Paul II in Madeira, canonized by the Catholic Church in April 2014.The Diocese of Funchal made the request to the Holy See in 2011.
On the altar, a tombstone stands guard over a silver box, in which are three white hairs of John Paul II and a certificate of authenticity from the Vatican.
Due to this, Atouguia Church will become a major attraction on the religious tourism circuit from now on.
