The exhibition covers six centuries of history and places a particular emphasis on the period of the introduction and large-scale development of sugarcane cultivation in the Madeiran archipelago in the late fifteenth century and the early stages of its export to Lisbon and then to the rest of Europe through the ports of Flanders, Bruges and Antwerp, where merchants traded “white gold” for mostly religious art pieces, including sculptures, paintings and religious jewellery.

Highlights of the pieces on display include the “Virgin and Child” (15th century), the Altarpiece of the Magi (16th century) and the Triptych of Our Lady of Mercy flanked by Saints Christopher, Paul, Peter and Sebastian by Jan Provost of the Flemish school, dated 1529.

This approach conveys the possibility of listening to both solo compositions and joint themes, exploring several music registers, where erudite music, Jazz, and the traditional Portuguese and Brazilian Chorinho, bring a different feel and sound.
Furthermore, their entire repertoire is integrated in the Atlantic Lusophony and the dynamics of the Viola de Cinco Ordens in recent years seeking their place in the history of music of a vast geographical area – from Minho (northern Portugal), to Rio Grande do Sul (southern Brazil), to the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde since the early days of settlement.

The Viola de Arame (is a five-stringed Portuguese guitar also known as Baroque guitar) is associated to Madeira and Porto Santo musical traditions, a mandatory instrument, in both Charamba and in the Baile da Meia Volta music styles, recognised as the most emblematic musical instrument of Porto Santo island, and unique in Portugal.

Find out more about what to expect from the Madeira Flower Festival, which will take place between the 19th of April and the 13th of May:

Saturday
On Saturday morning the Children's Parade takes place, in which hundreds of children, dressed for the occasion, parade to Praça do Município to build a beautiful flower mural symbolically named “Wall of Hope”.
This initiative, which has been held for over three decades, combines childhood innocence and the delicacy of flowers in a ceremony calling for peace in the world. Each child takes a flower and the ceremony usually culminates with a release of doves and a children's show.

Friday to Sunday
On Sunday afternoon, the streets of Funchal city centre are once again filled with music, colour and soft aromas, with the sumptuous float parade, which harmoniously combines numerous floral species with blooming decorations full of creativity. The Flower Festival Float Parade, held since 1979, is one of the most striking and eagerly anticipated events of the entire festival, for tourists and residents alike. This event is known for the magnificence and splendour of the floats and costumes of the hundreds of participants, mostly children, richly adorned with numerous, varied and magnificent floral species, parading along a planned route to the sound of festive musical themes and performing both simple and elaborate choreographies.

The Flower Festival is also a cultural event. Tradition is particularly associated with the event, whether through the performances of folk groups, or through the construction of the beautiful floral carpets. At the same time, homage is paid to flowers at the magnificent Flower Exhibition and the city is animated with music concerts and variety shows.

Other initiatives that are included on the schedule:

Conservatory Concerts
12 May 2018
Venue: Auditório do Centro Cultural e de Congressos do Porto Santo
Preço: Gratuito

Concert by the Academic Conservatory Orchestra

Concert by the students from the Madeira Music Conservatory at Porto Santo Cultural and Congress Center Auditorium

Project Coordinator: Francisco José Pereira Loreto

During the Celebrations of the 600 Years of the Discovery of Porto Santo, it is with great pleasure that the Conservatory’s Academic Orchestra presents, for the first time, a concert on this island that could be offered in any concert stage in the world. Famous compositions like Ravel’s «Bolero» or «Phantom of the Opera» are among the symphonic repertoire.

When João Gonçalves Zarco discovered the island of Porto Santo in 1418, after a storm, it set the beginning of a new Era, the Discoveries, during which the Portuguese were of great importance. This discovery of new worlds significantly contributed for the appearance of the Enlightenment period in the 17th century, a fundamental matrix in the occidental world for the past few centuries. As a result, the Performing Arts, including public concerts, have taken their own space in the cultural spectre of the European people, which we are proud to be part of.

In this small island, “where it all began” 600 years ago, and despite the double ultra-peripherical situation that characterizes this Atlantic island, it is a reason of great joy to be able to celebrate with a Concert this stoic, brave and immortal achievement. The concert will culminate with the interpretation of Edouard Elgar’s Nº1 March.

Concert’s Programme:

«Bolero» de Maurice Ravel

Suite nº 1 «Carmen» de Georges Bizet

Suite nº 2 «L´Arlesienne» de Georges Bizet

«Fantasma da Opera» de Andrew Lloyd Webber

Marcha nº 1 «Pompa e Circunstância» de Edouard Elgar

Launch of CTT new stamps collection - 600th anniversary of the Celebration of the Discovery of Porto Santo Island
22 June 2018
Venue: Porto Santo
Preço: Gratuito

Almost six hundred years after the earliest debates and declarations about the discovery of Madeira, there is no doubt that Madeira was not discovered by the Portuguese as much as it was recognised and occupied.

Is this a task less noble than one of chance, a journey into the unknown without a guide by which to ply the ocean and uncover the unknown?

Since the 1980s we have worked to gather all the necessary information as to better understanding this subject ,and today, after more than thirty years, we embark on new mission to learn more on this topic.

Venue:Town Hall "Noble Hall"

3.30pm – Launch of CTT new series of stamps depictin" The celebrattions of the 600th anniversary of the Discovery of Porto Santo Island".
4pm – Book launch: "The (Re)discovery/(Re)cognition of Porto Santo and Madeira", by Alberto Vieira

"The postage stamp is the largest multiplier of art in the world; the most democratic way of bringing art to all, wherever they are. Millions of people, whether experts or not, look at the stamps in a critical way, analysing the artist's interpretation, the quality of the printing, the techniques used, etc.
When someone describes a stamp as being "beautiful", they are expressing a complex assessment, because besides the primary intimacy of the affective relationship between the stamp's theme and the observer (the origin of the affirmation), the observer is also unconsciously evaluating the printing technique and the artist's work, the quality of the paper and its grammage, among several other varied details.
Although the history of Portugal's stamps and their design seems to contradict this (considering the great painters who have illustrated stamps through the ages), the fact is that great artists, painters and sculptors do not always make great stamp illustrators.
The extreme reduction in the scale of a work – up to 60:1 when moving from a canvas to a stamp – is not often compatible with dense formal artistic expression.
It's a very specialised technique which requires a restraint and "cleanliness" of aspect that allows any person to read and understand the themes presented on a rectangle of only 30.6 mm x 40 mm.
The degree of artistic difficulty is further heightened by the fact that it is also necessary to incorporate into the original design mandatory elements such as the name of the country, the printing house, the stamp's value etc.
Thus, the choice of original images for the stamps commemorating the "Discovery of Porto Santo Island" had to be closely monitored not only by the regional authorities but also by the art and design services of the CTT, so that the final result met the requirements of the original brief. This is a task of significant responsibility as these stamps will go around the whole world giving testimony (whether perfect or imperfect) of the event they commemorate."

15th century
The world arrives to Madeira

It was in the 15th century that the world arrived in Madeira. First to Porto Santo, then to the great island of Madeira, thus named for its many trees (Camões, Os Lusíadas, Song V).
It was the discovery of a paradise. Then came the captaincies, the people, the products. More than a paradise, the archipelago would become an open warehouse on the high seas from which Portugal and Madeira would depart for the world.

"In Festo S. Vicentii - Music for Saint Vincent"

As part of the 600th anniversary celebrations of the Discovery of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, the "Music in the North" cycle of Baroque music aims to explore and promote among the Madeiran public one of the most remarkable and rich periods of our musical heritage from the 17th and 18th centuries. A period of great transformations, it laid the foundations for the musical system still in use today and produced remarkable composers and works we all know and love.

The title, "Music in the North", refers to the fact that the entire cycle is to be presented on the north coast of Madeira, thus giving these municipalities a cultural event with unique characteristics on the island. This cycle of music was presented by the Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture at the congress "São Jorge – Memory and Future" held in August of last year. The focus on the Baroque period arose from the relationship with the rich heritage existing in this parish: the treasured Parish Church of São Jorge.

Centred on sacred music, the programme will present works by great international composers, such as the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, together with a Salve Regina by Alessandro Scarlatti, both works for Soprano, Alto and Orchestra which will be interpreted by the Mateus Baroque Orchestra on period instruments. Also included are works by Vivaldi and Bach and by famous Portuguese composers such as António Teixeira, Carlos Seixas and Francisco António de Almeida, among others, interpreted by two vocal ensembles dedicated to the interpretation of polyphonic music from Portugal. The aim is to showcase some of the national and international music of this period.

The programmes also seek to mark the period of Lent which coincides with the festival, putting an emphasis on works that were composed for this period and thus encouraging reflection.
